RCIA formation—survey results

  1. The survey does not surprise me one little bit. Especially the Discussion vs Apprenticeship model. I firmly believe that the majority of parishes are doing the discussion model. From my experience and observation around the country, the majority are in the program (school year) mode. Apprenticeship is not even in the vocabulary. I think we really need to look at inviting our Catechumens & Candidates to enter more fully into the life of the parish (Church) as they progress through the process. Doing a year round process certainly opens doors for this to happen.
So, we continue to journey together.

  2. Thanks for the survey and the summary, Nick. One thing I find myself wondering, however, is how we should use this data. Are these the same things inquirers, catechumens, elect, and candidates would say they need? Or are these results, as impressions from various of us involved in Christian initiation ministry, more a commentary on what we value most and less about those to whom we minister?

If we apply one point per value (1 through 5) and multiply it by the number of responses we get an overall “weight” or importance for each of the fields. The five highest are sacraments (881), liturgical practices (861), primary doctrines (839), social teaching (807), and Catholic customs (789). On the whole this is not a bad reflection of the four points of RCIA 75–catechesis, Christian way of life, liturgical rites, and apostolic life–that we collectively think are most important.
