  1. Mary Ann Corcoran

Two years ago, in our parish of St Agnes in West Chester Pennsylvania, for our RITE OF ACCEPTANCE, those seeking to be baptized, were greeted at the entrance of the Church and signed on the senses by their sponsors, in one of the aisles, towards the back of the Church, so the community could witness the RITE with its prayers and gestures. Then the catechumens were led to a pew in the front of the Church for the Liturgy of The Word. This past year, because of COVID, and the closeness of persons to one another in the above described situation, the RITE OF ACCEPTANCE was moved to the sanctuary. However, both years, I explained to the catechumens, the significance of the RITE and why the proper place is at the Door of the Church.
Since the R.C.I.A. is the paradigm for all other Sacraments of the Church, the RITE OF BAPTISM for INFANTS, should also begin at the Door of the Church, as the priest or deacon asks the parents: “What name do you give your child? What do you ask of God’s Church for N.? ” and then he claims the child for Christ by signing him/her on the forehead with the CROSS of CHRIST and invites parents and godparents to also sign the child with the CROSS of CHRIST. Then child/children, parents, and godparents, should move to a place in the Church that is suitable for listening to the Word of God and the Rites and prayers before the pouring of the water.
